MJHS held its second Small Group House Meeting where students were reminded of October’s Asset of the Month, integrity, by playing “Pass the Button”. Great work, Demons!
On Tuesday the MJHS ACCESS class visited Gost Coffee, Badda Bings, and Crosswind Farms. Gost Coffee took the students on a tour of their coffee shop and showed them how they roast their coffee beans. At Badda Bings, the students enjoyed delicious food. Lastly, they were able to pick a pumpkin and visit some animals at Crosswind Farms. All of this was made possible thanks to the generous support of the Rainbow Cafe Coffee Cart! Thank you to the MJHS staff who supports their ACCESS students every week by purchasing coffee, tea, and popcorn!
What a gourd-ous day for first grade to get their very own pumpkin delivered from Bothwell Farms! Students were so excited to receive theirs and can’t wait to decorate them! #wilsoncreeklearns #msd114

This week has been declared “Misophonia Awareness Week” at MJHS and on Thursday 8th graders were lucky enough to learn more about this rare disorder. Lots of thank you’s go out to everyone who helped shed more light on Misophonia this week! Supporting our students in the best ways we know how isn’t just a teacher’s way, it’s the Manhattan way! 💙💙
Over the last two class periods, third graders explored the concept of automation! They were challenged to write a program so that their robot would physically sort animals into their correct habitats (represented by quadrilaterals to tie back to our previous lessons). This sounds like a simple task, but when you consider the amount of knowledge needed to do so, it’s really quite impressive!
When writing the program, students needed to:
Understand the science concept of a habitat and correctly identify the habitats of 5 given animals
Understand the coding concept of an Event (an action performed by the human that signals a computer to respond in a certain way) and recognize that their program would need 4 separate events (one for each habitat)
Understand the coding concept of Sequences (commands in the correct order) and correctly assemble 4 separate sequences, connecting each to an Event
Understand how to use directional commands (drive forward, backward, turn left, turn right) and how to customize the distance driven or degrees turned
When running the program, students needed to…
Be able to READ code in order to decide which sequence would take the selected animal to its habitat, and which event would begin that sequence
As well as how to work as a member of a team, tackle a problem full of ambiguity, and persevere through small failures in order to reach a goal.
Take a minute to watch this in action and consider what an amazing thing this is for a third grader to be able to do!
