Manhattan Junior High

Welcome to Manhattan Junior High School

Manhattan Junior High School, located at 15414 W. Smith Road in Manhattan, IL, is one of four buildings in Manhattan School District 114. For the 2024-2025 school year, over 60 staff members will serve over 600 students in grades 6-8 in our brand new building.

Grades 6-8 are a crucial time in an adolescent child’s development, continuing to build on the foundation of learning received in the primary levels while working towards becoming prepared for high school. Staff members at Manhattan Junior High School have worked to design curriculum in the core content areas as well as in our cycles and physical education classes that are aligned with the Illinois State Standards, ensuring the lessons and assessments are appropriately rigorous and engaging for our learners while also supporting all students.

Providing a safe and welcoming environment for all students where they have opportunities to grow and experience success in the classroom and in extracurricular activities is a priority of Manhattan Junior High School. MJHS offers a wide variety of athletic, academic, and musical offerings for our learners.

What is Demon P.R.I.D.E.?

We are proud of all of our students and staff, and we believe that being a Demon is something members of our learning community should take pride in. At Manhattan Junior High School, we expect all students and staff to display Demon P.R.I.D.E. in their words, actions, and interactions in school and in our village. Below are the characteristics of Demon P.R.I.D.E.

Preparedness - A Demon arrives at school every day expecting to be an active participant in learning. We bring all our expected materials with us.  We show up prepared to contribute positively to the learning environment.

Respect - A Demon displays kindness and compassion.  We are considerate and supportive of others in our building and community. We take care of the spaces we are working in, leaving places better than we found them.

Integrity - A Demon sets a positive example for everyone around them, regardless of the setting or situation. We do what we say and say what we mean.  We do the right thing, no matter what.

Determination - A Demon is motivated to accomplish their goals. We are willing to put in hard work, even when we face setbacks. We take challenges head-on and utilize the support we have to conquer tough tasks.

Effort - A Demon has a growth mindset. We give our best effort in all areas regardless of the difficulty. We know we can always improve and strive for greatness in everything we do.

Principal Welcome

Hello, Manhattan Students, Parents, and Community Members,

My name is Vincent Perillo, and I am grateful to be serving as the principal of Manhattan Junior High School for the 2024-2025 school year. This school year will be my 23rd in education, all in Manhattan. I began as an ELA teacher and taught a variety of learners at multiple grade levels for 18 years. From there, I became an Instructional Specialist at the Junior High for two years before becoming our Assistant Principal the last two years. I am excited for the upcoming year, especially with us opening the new building and the benefits the students, staff, and community are going to experience with the new school.

I view my role as being the biggest champion for educational and personal growth and success for all of our students. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, ideas, concerns, or feedback. By working together with our amazing staff and our supportive families, I am confident that we can “Continue the Legacy” this school year and provide opportunities for all of our students to be their best selves.

Go Demons!
