Welcome to Wilson Creek!
As building principal, it is my honor to serve the Wilson Creek Elementary School community. By fostering a community of learners among staff, students, and families, it is my goal to lead and support everyone involved in giving each child in Manhattan the opportunity to start their education with a strong foundation here at Wilson Creek.
In education, we are faced with the challenge of constantly "keeping our plates spinning". That is, developing our curriculum, establishing our instructional goals, implementing lessons, meeting the individual academic and social/emotional needs of each child, and always aspiring to learn and grow as professionals. We have many plates spinning here at Wilson Creek and we will work together to ensure everyone in the school community feels supported and prepared to always keep them spinning.
Our staff is committed to collaborating and improving upon past practice to strengthen academic rigor and align instruction to the Common Core State Standards. Our full-day Kindergarten program had great success in its first three years and the Kindergarten team is working to develop a plan to provide a comprehensive, consistent academic experience for all of our Kindergarten students. Our 1st grade team is up for the challenge of meeting the high expectations set by these students after their year in full-day Kindergarten as well as implementing a new reading and language arts curriculum. Houghton Mifflin-Harcourt's Journeys resources will be used to supplement a well-rounded week of instruction in each 1st grade classroom. This year, 2nd grade teachers will now build off of the Journeys experience of their students to begin implementation of the Journeys curriculum at their grade level. All three grade levels will continue to implement the Daily 5 structure for delivering small group reading instruction as well as implementing 4 NGSS-aligned science units and STEM activities. There are great things happening at Wilson Creek!
I look forward to learning and growing with the students and staff of Wilson Creek this year. I welcome you to be a part of our community of learners. If you have questions, please feel free to call, email, or visit us at anytime.
